Jaap Stam has guided Reading as high as third in the Championship so far this season

Reading manager Jaap Stam warned his players there is “no chance of relaxing” in the Championship after their defeat by Brentford.

The Royals’ six-match unbeaten league run was ended in a 4-1 reverse at Griffin Park on Tuesday.

“We’ve had a good start and done well up until now,” Stam told BBC Radio Berkshire. “You want to learn from every game you play.

“Sometimes when you don’t start a game well, the opponent can take advantage.”

Reading were 3-0 behind to Brentford after an hour and despite Yann Kermorgant’s second-half penalty, were easily second-best.

“You need to know that if you want to win games, you need to be sharp as a team in what you want to do,” Stam added.

“There’s no chance for relaxing or thinking we’re going to do this at 80%. Every game we need to give the full 100% and we need to be fully focused.

“But, you don’t need to go back to square one after this. We’ve had a good run and we want to keep that up.”

Reading, who slipped out of the top six following the defeat, face Derby at home on Saturday.
