Schalke have failed in their initial £10million bid to sign Tottenham outcast Nabil Bentaleb, according to reports.
The German Bundesliga outfit made their move for the 21-year-old Algeria international midfielder, who has been banished to train with the Under-21s by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino after expressing a desire to leave the club this summer.
However, their first offer has been rebuffed by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy as he is holding out for more money for Bentaleb, who is a product of the youth academy and has scored one goal in 46 first-team appearances since 2013.
Bentaleb is looking for a move away from White Hart Lane after dropping down Pochettino’s pecking order behind the likes of Eric Dier, summer signing Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele.
Whether Schalke will return with a new, improved bid for his signature remains to be seen.
