Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo says he was never interested in re-signing Diego Costa and claims his place is at Chelsea.
The Spain international’s future has been the subject of speculation all summer after he reportedly informed the Blues that he wants to leave the club and go back to Atletico Madrid.
Atleti were reported to be interested in bringing the 27-year-old back to the Vincente Calderon and Costa was spotted telling international colleague Sergio Ramos that the Blues were preventing him from returning to Madrid before a pre-season friendly.
Cerezo has now come out and poured cold water on his side ever having any intention of signing Costa, claiming he would not want to upset Atletico’s good relationship with Chelsea.
“There was never a Diego Costa transfer saga,” Cerezo told Marca. “Diego has a contract with Chelsea and is part of manager Antonio Conte’s squad. We are on friendly terms with Chelsea and see them as our friends.
“Diego is also a friend and a true Atletico man, but his place is at Chelsea now and I am sure he will be successful there. We like Diego for everything that he has done for us and he knows Atletico will always be his home.
“But there won’t be new acquisitions beyond our budget.”
