Jay Rodriguez will stay at Southampton and fight for his place after a loan move on deadline day was blocked.
Rodriguez has been plagued with injuries over the past two seasons and the Saints were initially in favour of allowing the forward to leave on a temporary deal before the transfer window shut.
West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland, Hull City and Watford were all rumoured to be showing a keen interest and one of the four was expected to wrap up a deal.
However, the England international’s performance in the 1-1 draw against Sunderland last time out, in which he scored, caused manager Claude Puel to change his mind.
The former Nice boss was impressed with what he saw of the 27-year-old and blocked the numerous loan offers that came Southampton’s way.
Rodriguez, who was keen to leave, will now have to stay and fight for a regular spot as the Saints look to pick up their first win of the season away at Arsenal on September 10.
