Southampton goalkeeper replaces team-mate Fraser Forster in England squad

Desperate Allardyce was forced to turn to the Southampton keeper after club team-mate Fraser Forster was ruled out because of an arm injury.

McCarthy, 26, has played just once since losing his Crystal Palace starting spot 12 months ago.

He joined Southampton in the summer to be Forster’s back-up – and now the uncapped keeper has had to come to Allardyce’s rescue ahead of Sunday’s opening World Cup 2018 qualifier against Slovakia.
