Boss Claude Puel says Jose Fonte has informed him he wants to stay at Southampton, shunning interest from Manchester United.
The Red Devils reportedly held informal talks with the Portugal international last month to discuss a move to Old Trafford and supposedly had caught the eye of the experienced defender.
The 32-year-old had previously said he was happy to be linked with a move to United, who were ready to offer Marcos Rojo plus cash for Fonte’s signature.
Arsenal had also been alleged to have registered their interest in Fonte but Puel says he now has the defender’s word that he is happy to stay put and focus on another season at St Mary’s.
“The situation of Jose is now ready and normal and Jose is concentrate always on his football and his team,” he said.
“For Jose it was important for us, for me, to keep him in the squad because he has a good personality, a good professional and good leadership.
“It’s important to keep Jose. It’s normal at the start of the preseason or after the Euros to have different thoughts but now all is OK.”
Reports suggest Fonte has agreed in principal a new contract with Saints that will see his weekly wages rise from £45,000 to £70,000-per-week.
