Southampton comfortably overcome relegation threatened Newcastle at St Mary’s.
It took the home side just four minutes to take the lead when Shane Long jinked his way past Steven Taylor and into the box before firing his shot past Karl Darlow.
Ronald Koeman’s men doubled their lead just before half-time when Daryl Janmaat made a mess of a clearance and Long picked out Graziano Pelle and he slotted in his fourth goal in four games.
It got even worse for the visiting side just after the break, when Victor Wanyama had acres of space to find a finish after Jose Fonte’s shot was cleared off the line.
The Magpies were poor throughout, though they did pull a goal back on 65 minutes when Andros Townsend cut in from the right and found the top corner with a stunning strike.
Southampton comfortably held out for the win that keeps them challenging for Europe, while Newcastle are now running out of games to keep themselves in the Premier League.
