Southampton eased into the fourth round of the EFL Cup with a routine 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace at St Mary’s.
Charlie Austin and Academy product Jake Hesketh grabbed the goals for Saints while the Eagles suffered another injury blow when Scott Dann appeared to pick up a hamstring problem in the 18th minute and had to be replaced by Martin Kelly.
Saints took the lead in the 15 minutes later when Austin casually rolled his penalty into the corner of the net after Kelly had brought down Shane Long.
Austin almost doubled Southampton’s lead just before the break but the former QPR striker was denied by Wayne Hennessey.
Hesketh made it 2-0 to Claude Puel’s dominant side with his first goal for the club. Long’s initial shot was saved by Hennessey but Hesketh swept a left-footed shot home in the 63rd minute from the edge of the box.
Alan Pardew brought on club-record signing Christian Benteke and Jason Puncheon as late substitutes but they were unable to grab even a consolation goal for a Palace side that had reached the FA Cup final last season but will not be heading to Wembley for the EFL Cup final this term.
