Saints have moved back into contention to sign Anderlecht’s Dennis Praet after it emerged that talks with Sevilla had hit the buffers.
Reports in Belgium over the weekend claimed that talks between Anderlecht and Sevilla had failed to progress and that could let in the likes of Southampton and Sampdoria.
The 22-year-old midfielder favours a move to the Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium and his father has previously stated a preference for his son moving to the Spanish club.
However, Anderlecht chairman Herman Van Holsbeeck has also suggested that Praet could stay for one further season in Brussels because they have him under contract until 2017.
Southampton and at least one Italian club are waiting for their chance to enter negotiations, which could come within the next few days if the talks with Sevilla fail to progress.
