Sensational transfer news: Chelsea linked with move for West Ham striker Andy Carroll

Andy Carroll has emerged as a sensational transfer target for Chelsea.

According to The Sun, the Premier League champions have earmarked the West Ham striker as a potential January signing.

Boss Antonio Conte is set to allow Michy Batshuayi to depart this month and wants to bring in a new striker this month as back-up to Alvaro Morata.

Conte wanted to bring in a target-man in the summer but missed out on Fernando Llorente as he opted to join Spurs.

Now he could turn to Carroll, who scored twice for West Ham in Tuesday night’s win over West Brom.

The 28-year-old has been beset by injury problems since joining the Hammers from Liverpool in 2012, initially on loan before completing a permanent £15m transfer.

But he has recently returned to fitness and been restored to the West Ham team.

Carroll, who was a £35m signing for Liverpool back in 2011, has shown he can be a top Premier League performer when fit.

It would be a huge gamble on Chelsea’s part though to bring in the nine-cap England international, given his terrible fitness record.
