Spurs are reportedly prepared to offer Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez a huge salary as they try and lure him to the club this summer.
The 21-year-old has emerged as a top target for Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and there are claims in Spain that chairman Daniel Levy is prepared to sanction a huge salary offer that would make him the club’s highest-ever earner.
The midfielder has a £36m release clause in his contract and attention in the youngster has soared in the past few weeks after his sensational individual goal in Atletico’s 1-0 Champions League semi-final first-leg win over Bayern Munich last month.
Saul is under contract at the Vicente Calderon until 2020 and is a key member of Diego Simeone’s first-team plans but if Spurs, or anyone else, matches the release clause a deal could go through this summer, even though Atletico president Enrique Cerezo said recently he thinks the player will stay.
“Saul has a contract with us,” Cerezo said. “He’s a player from our academy and is Atletico through and through. From what I know, and from what he himself has told me, he wants to stay with us.”
Saul has scored 13 goals in 93 appearances for Atletico in all competitions since breaking through from the club’s academy.
