Sam Allardyce: Sunderland players need to take responsibility for the mess we’re in

Improved displays have both encouraged Allardyce and increased his sense of frustration, but he left his players in no doubt that despite outplaying West Ham in the second half and creating a hatful of chances, it was their own fault they lost.

“The recovery we have made in performances has not been reflected in results,” he added.

“It’s been pretty miraculous particularly since the new players came in.

“That’s our great hope but at the end of the day, we have to accept responsibility that we threw it away. The performance: ‘well done, great but it’s rubbish’.

“That doesn’t make any difference when I try to go to sleep on Saturday night and wake up on Sunday morning because we still lost.”
