Sam Allardyce opens up on his England squad choice: It was a hard decision

Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater is in after just missing out in the summer while veteran defender Phil Jagielka, 34, and fit-again Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw return in defence.

Theo Walcott is also selected after getting the nod over Arsenal team-mate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Liverpool’s James Milner is out after retiring from international football, Ryan Bertand is sidelined through injury at Southampton while rookie Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is demoted to the Under-21 squad.

There was no recall for Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe, despite his goals keeping the Black Cats up last season under Allardyce.

England’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney – expected to remain as captain – has been listed as a midfielder which suggest Allardyce fancies using him in a similar role he has deployed for Manchester United this season.

Joe Hart remains in the squad despite being given the elbow as Manchester City’s No.1 by new boss Pep Guardiola.
