“It was a question of taking a break or coming out of it completely after doing it so long and finding out whether I wanted to put myself though the stresses and strains of this job again.

“Obviously, it did not take me too long to decide that I did.”

Though some West Ham fans had it in for Allardyce, the man remains bullish of the job he did and believes he left them in a far healthier state than when he arrived.

He added: “I made the decision on the basis that I was leaving on a high.

“I was very proud of having built a very good team that’s got better with a few more signings.

“I don’t think they’re too far ahead now in terms of points two where we were last year but sadly we had a very poor end to the season which meant that we probably finished five or six places lower than we should have done.
