Southampton are watching talented Austrian attacking midfielder Louis Schaub, but he looks set to extend his contract at Rapid Vienna.
The Saints have contacted Schaub’s representatives in Austria and the Netherlands to make their interest known in the 21-year-old, who has less than a year left on his contract at Rapid.
Sources in Austria suggest Schaub is on the verge of extending his contract until 2020 but any new deal is likely to include a buyout clause that may not prove prohibitive.
The midfielder has been in fine form this season, scoring five goals in eight league matches while adding another four in five Europa League appearances.
He was on the bench for Austria’s World Cup qualifier against Georgia last month and is expected to receive his first full cap when Wales arrive in Vienna for a key clash on October 6.
