Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk is calling on the Netherlands to defeat England on Tuesday and get on the ‘road to the World Cup’.
The Dutch have suffered an alarming slide since they finished third at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and subsequently failed to qualify for the European Championship this summer for the first time since 1984, which was ironically also hosted by France.
France defeated them 3-2 in Amsterdam in a friendly on Friday – a fourth successive home defeat for the Dutch – so Van Dijk is looking for a positive reaction at Wembley on Tuesday, as Danny Blind’s men continue their preparations to try and qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
“We owe our fans after what has happened and as players we all feel we have to answer to ourselves too,” he told the Mirror.
“We should have done much better. It is now time to come up with some very good performances.
“At Wembley our road to the World Cup starts here.”
