Cedric Soares says Southampton still have hope of qualifying for Europe this season despite suffering a setback at Leicester.
The Saints were beaten 1-0 by the Premier League leaders on Sunday and they now sit six points adrift of fifth-placed Manchester United, who currently occupy the last guaranteed European qualification spot.
Summer signing Cedric felt Southampton were unfortunate to emerge empty-handed from their trip to the King Power Stadium and wants the team to take heart from their performances as they look to get back on track in the race for Europe.
“We always look up,” he told Southampton’s website. “That’s the mentality. Of course we are fighting for a place in Europe. It’s a goal our players need to have in their heads. I think it is possible.
“Of course, we fight every game to achieve the best result. We see how it goes game by game and see in the end how it counts.”
Cedric went on to say that he is confident Southampton will produce a response to their loss at Leicester when relegation-threatened Newcastle come to town on Saturday.
“Of course, it is a tough result for us because it is unfair but we keep our level every game because the Premier league is like that. Our mentality always needs to be the highest position on the table possible,” he added.
