Southampton have been linked with a swoop to sign Feyenoord central defender Terence Kongolo.
New Saints’ boss Claude Puel is continuing to scour the market for new faces having replaced Ronald Koeman in the St Mary’s hot-seat this summer, and it appears he would like to bolster his defensive options.
Kongolo has attracted plenty of interest after impressing when making 29 appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie last term, while the 22-year-old has picked up two caps for the Netherlands since his 2014 debut.
Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk are the Saints’ current central defensive partnership, but Puel is looking to bring in competition for the duo.
However, his hopes of signing Kongolo could be scuppered by former Saints’ boss Ronald Koeman, who is also looking to sign Kongolo for his new club Everton now John Stones looks poised to leave for Manchester City.
Stoke City have also been credited with an interest in the player, but the Saints will hope the lure of Europa League football helps them win the race.
