Southampton are continuing to watch Benfica’s Portugal Under-21 midfielder Andre Horta and saw him in action on Tuesday.
Saints were among the clubs represented at Benfica’s Champions League match against Besiktas in a scouting capacity with Horta, 19, understood to be the target.
Portuguese newspaper Record claimed Southampton were interested in Horta back in February while he was playing on loan at Vitoria Setubal.
The club are also understood to have followed his progress at the Toulon tournament in the summer.
Since returning to Benfica, Horta has established himself as a first-team regular in one of the two central midfield positions, starting all four of the Eagles’ league matches this term.
He is under contract at the Stadium of Light until 2021 and is valued at £1.7million by transfermarkt, which could be multiplied many times over by the time Benfica consider selling him.
