Jay Rodriguez staked his claim for a return to the Southampton first team with a hat-trick against Liverpool’s Under-21s on Sunday.
The 26-year-old striker has endured an extremely frustrating period over the last two years since suffering a serious knee injury in April 2014 which saw him miss the whole of last season.
The Englishman made his comeback in August 2015 before suffering a foot injury in October which has, once again, forced him to watch Southampton from the sidelines.
However Rodriguez was in action for the Under-21s on Sunday and fired in a treble to help the Saints youngsters beat Liverpool 5-0 in Chester as the first team was coming back from two goals down to defeat the Merseysiders 3-2 at St Mary’s.
Afterwards he tweeted: “Great feeling to be back scoring goals! Solid 80 mins in the tank. Big result for the lads from 0-2 down also!#WeMarchOn.”
Southampton are next in Premier League action against table-topping Leicester City on Sunday, April 3 and are 5/2 with Titanbet to claim the spoils.
