Reports in the Netherlands on Wednesday claim Saints’ interest in the French forward, who scored 19 goals in 37 league starts last season, is now ‘dormant’.

Southampton sent a scout to watch Haller in action 10 days ago but Puel’s plans have changed following the addition of Sofiane Boufal and the impressive display of Rodriguez.

The ex-Burnley striker was set to leave the club on loan but his cameo appearance and equaliser against Sunderland has given the Saints boss food for thought.

Puel said after the match that he would discuss the situation with the player and was open-minded, and it is thought all parties have agreed it is now best for him to stay.

The Frenchman is understood to see Rodriguez as fitting into his system and he will also provide a valuable option while Boufal, who hasn’t played since April, gets fit.
