Stekelenburg made 17 Premier League appearances for Saints this season as he stood in for the injured Fraser Forster during his year-long loan deal and he impressed enough for boss Ronald Koeman to offer him the chance of a permanent move, according to reports.

Forster will remain as Saints’ first-choice custodian next term after recently signing a new five-year deal at St Mary’s but Stekelenburg would offer decent back up and the Cottagers are happy for the deal to go through, with the Premier League side ready to pay in the region of £2million for the 33-year-old.

Forster’s future was uncertain amid interest from Chelsea but the speculation ended when he penned new terms and Saints now appear close to adding Stekelenburg to their ranks too.
