Saints’ chance to sign Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost has edged closer after the German club held talks with Juventus’ Simone Zaza.
Juve forward Zaza was in Germany over the weekend to sort out personal terms with the Bundesliga outfit but the two clubs have not yet come to an agreement over the fee for the Italian international.
Reports in Germany claim Dost will be allowed to leave once Wolfsburg have his replacement signed up.
The 27-year-old Dutch hitman is understood to be keen on a move to St Mary’s and has previously described Southampton as “a nice club”.
However, Bild claim Saints will face competition for his signature from Espanyol, Real Betis, Sevilla and Sporting Lisbon.
Dost scored 16 Bundesliga goals in 17 starts the season before last but managed only eight in 14 last term.
