Jay Rodriguez says he wants to be back in the first team very soon after coming through an outing for the Under-21s unscathed.
The 26-year-old has endured an extremely frustrating period over the last two years since suffering a serious knee injury in April 2014 which saw him miss the whole of last season.
The Englishman made his comeback in August 2015 before suffering a foot injury in October which has once again forced him to watch Southampton from the sidelines.
Rodriguez returned to training with Ronald Koeman’s first team last month and played an hour of the Saints’ Under-21 clash at Hartlepool on Monday as he steps up his recovery.
The former Burnley striker says he is feeling fully fit and believes he is ready to make his return for the senior side, calling on Koeman to bring him back into the fold.
“I feel fully fit now, I think it’s just obviously match fitness and by playing hopefully I can improve,” he told Southampton’s website.
“I feel now that I’ve played a game, a competitive game, it’s just a case of see what happens and just try and work hard and keep improving.”
