Chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has hinted that Bastian Schweinsteiger could return to Bayern Munich from Manchester United.
It has become clear that the German World Cup-winning midfielder, who celebrated his 32nd birthday on Monday, is not in the plans of incoming United boss Jose Mourinho.
Indeed Schweinsteiger celebrated his birthday by being told to train with the Red Devils’ Under-23s which suggests he will not figure in the Portuguese’s 25-man squad plans this season.
Despite a disappointing injury-hit season in the Premier League following his £15million switch from Bayern last summer, there have been several clubs expressing an interest in Schweinsteiger, including AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.
However, his former club could enter the fray after Rummenigge dropped a hint that they could take him back to the Allianz Arena.
He told Bild: “Should [Schweinsteiger] speak in the future at some point about a desire to return then we will discuss it with him.”
