“But I don’t see any reason at the moment to doubt his ability and capacity to challenge and show us he’s one of the best people for the job.”
Liverpool team-mate James Milner, who will captain England for the first time tomorrow night in the absence of Wayne Rooney and Gary Cahill, reckons Sturridge’s injury troubles has made him stronger.
He reckons Sturridge has it all and is even better on the training pitch than Argentine superstar Sergio Aguero, who he played with at Manchester City.
Milner said: “He trains better than Sergio, I know that. It’s about how long it takes to get back up to speed. For him it seems to take a warm up.
“The experiences he’s gone through may have made him hungry.
“He’s been missing games, so when you get back, you want to stay there and hopefully that’s what he will do.”
