“I think so. Frank was a type like Stones. My brother never kicked the ball in the stands, never did it in his life”
Ronald de Boer
“If he now changes his game, he wouldn’t be that special, because he can defend. But what makes him so exciting is that he can play from the back.
“I know Frank likes players like that. Frank gets crazy if somebody kicks the ball out. I remember the Champions League final between Manchester United and Bayern Munich in Barcelona.
“The Bayern defender kicked the ball out. I think Gary Neville with his long throw-in, from there it went to the corner, became 1-1, and the rest is history.
“Frank would never choose a player who’s just defending, he would like to have a guy like Stones.”
De Boer had a good record of developing young defenders at Ajax, bringing through centre backs Jairo Riedewald and Joel Veltman and full backs Kenny Tete and Mitchell Dijks.
His brother Ronald, who worked alongside him in Amsterdam, said: “See what he did already with those youngsters. All four of them are full internationals this year.”
