Roberto Martinez warns fans there’s more ‘trauma’ ahead for young squad

11 Mar

A 10-man Everton threw away a 2-0 lead against West Ham last weekend to heap more woe on Martinez but he believes he should be defended.

The former Wigan chief reckons he is making progress despite the fact Everton have no chance of matching their fifth-place finish from his debut season in charge two years ago.

He added: “It takes a brave journalist to defend a manager who has lost 3-2 in the last 12 minutes. To say: ‘With this man, look at the record of building up a football club, and what he had to cope with’.

“It’s a new generation. It’s one of the toughest jobs to get new players winning football games, to create something, and it’s been smoothly done.

“The first season, 72 points. The second season, we went into Europe. This season, we reached the semi-finals of the League Cup.

“Consistently, this team is starting to cope with the expectations of doing something good in the cups. That’s difficult.”
