Di Matteo believes his side are shaping up ahead of today’s trip to Derby with latest signing Mile Jedinak, 32, on standby for his debut.
The Aussie midfielder joins goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, Tommy Elphick, Aaron Tshibola and striker Ross McCormack as new faces in Villa’s team.
Villa boss Di Matteo said: “When I first looked at the team I wanted to improve the spine of it. It’s probably something that many managers try to do.
“But you need to be able to identify the right people to do it and I think we’ve managed to sign some very good players in those positions now.
