Stoke say they are still locked in talks with West Brom as they look to pip Crystal Palace to the signature of Saido Berahino.
Stoke and Crystal Palace are involved in a two-way battle for the striker, who will be allowed to leave the Hawthorns at the right price, and Coates is hoping to win the day.
Neither Stoke or Palace have managed to meet West Brom’s valuation at this stage, although the £23million on the table from the Eagles is not far off.
The Potters will have to get closer to £25million and their chairman Peter Coates says talks are still going on, while accepting the final decision could come down to the player himself.
“[Saido Berahino] is on our list. We would like to do something,” Coates said. “We’re in the hands of the player and West Bromwich Albion at the minute and we’re working away on it.
“We would like to take him if a deal can be done.”
Tottenham were in the hunt at one stage, but after they pulled out, it is a straight scrap between Stoke and Palace for his services.
