Louis van Gaal is desperately short of defenders to face Shrewsbury in the FA Cup after it emerged that Donald Love is cup-tied.
The 21-year-old right-back, who made his debut against Sunderland earlier this month, appeared in this year’s competition while on loan at Wigan Athletic.
David de Gea is the latest player to join United’s lengthy injury list as under-scrutiny boss Van Gaal faces the prospect of having 14 first-teamers unavailable for Monday’s fifth-round trip to New Meadow.
Goalkeeper De Gea was set for a scan on Friday after he sustained a knee injury in the warm-up for the previous night’s Europa League defeat at FC Midtjylland.
United have also lost Wayne Rooney (knee), Marouane Fellaini (muscle injury), Cameron Borthwick-Jackson (illness) and Matteo Darmian (shoulder) in the last few days.
