Martial is thought to be pushing for a start again after a hamstring scare allowed Marcus Rashford to deputise for him, the teenager netting four goals in United’s last two matches.

Louis van Gaal could recall the Frenchman to his line-up on Wednesday night, although it will not be a popular decision to drop the young Mancunian after his goalscoring exploits.

Smalling and Darmian may feature in the squad after recovering from shoulder injuries while Marcos Rojo will be hoping to keep his place in the starting XI despite sustaining a knock in Sunday’s win over Arsenal.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Will Keane and Antonio Valencia are out, as are Wayne Rooney, Marouane Fellaini and Phil Jones. Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Bastian Schweinsteiger are the other absentees.
