Bologna chairman Joey Saputo says his club want to sign Liverpool’s Mario Balotelli to benefit the team, not as a publicity stunt.
The Rossoblu emerged as the latest club to take an interest in the 26-year-old at the weekend as speculation surrounding a return to Italy went up a notch after the striker was linked to Chievo, Sassuolo and Lazio recently.
The 26-year-old, who has been deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield, is supposedly open to playing again in Serie A and is considering his options as the transfer window reaches its conclusion.
Bologna’s Saputo says the decision whether to move for Balotteli rests with the club’s head coach and sporting director, rubbishing speculation he could push for a deal in a bid to boost the media attention the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara outfit receives.
“It’s up to our sporting director and our coach,” he told ANSA. “I leave it up to them to decide. We’re aiming to do a little bit better this season than we did last season and we need to work bit by bit, which is what we are doing.”
He added: “You can’t just go buying a player as a marketing exercise.”
