Liverpool are being linked with a move for Newcastle winger Andros Townsend and are ready to pay his £10.5m release fee.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is ready to take advantage of Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship by making a move but the Magpies are determined to keep hold.
An offer of £10.5million would trigger a release clause in the player’s contract that he signed in January and allow him to walk away from St James’ Park.
However, Newcastle are hoping a bumper pay rise will convince Townsend to turn his back on a quick return to the Premier League in favour of staying with Rafa Benitez’s men.
Reports claim Townsend is on £55,000-a-week but Newcastle are prepared to offer him £75,000 which would make him the highest-paid player in the Championship, but even that sort of money would not put off Liverpool.
