Manchester United are in the hunt to sign Romelu Lukaku and have been alerted by the striker’s suggestion he could leave Everton.
United have put a new striker at the top of their wanted list and it has been suggested Jose Mourinho will try and swoop for Lukaku, if he replaces Louis van Gaal as Reds boss.
Mourinho sold Lukaku to Everton when he was Chelsea boss, and it was a decision he lived to regret as the Belgian international has gone from strength to strength.
Lukaku has said that the Champions League is “the next step” for him as he is keen to test himself against Europe’s elite in next season’s campaign.
That would appear to cast doubt over his Everton future with the Toffees 13 points behind Manchester City, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot, but United would also have to ensure they made the top four.
Lukaku said: “That is the next step for me. I’m 23 next summer and I think it would be nice to play in the Champions League from next season.”
