Nathan Redmond knows Southampton will have to improve their game if they are to enjoy a successful Premier League campaign.
The 22-year-old made his debut for the south coast club in their 1-1 draw with Watford on Saturday, and he capped his first appearance with the equalising goal in the second half.
Saints spent a large proportion of the first half on the back foot, and despite an improved performance in the second period, Redmond knows they will have to up their game if they are to enjoy another successful top-flight campaign.
“We want to get off to a good start obviously, as every team does. But we started sloppy in the first half,” he said.
“For the second half we upped our game. It was important to get the first goal and get back into it. We didn’t get the second goal, but we showed great spirit to get back. On another day we might have won it.”
Southampton are next in action when they take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Friday night, and Redmond knows his side will have to be quick out of the blocks when they take on Jose Mourinho’s side.
He added: “We need to start better in our game next Friday.”
