The England Under-21 boss has stepped up to replace disgraced Sam Allardyce for the next four internationals – which could be good news for Redmond and other members of Claude Puel’s squad.

The Saints star scored a hat-trick during Southgate’s time in charge of the Under-21 side – against Wales in Swansea in 2015 – and has been knocking on the Three Lions’ door this season after being switched to play as a striker.

Saints team-mate Charlie Austin, with five goals in his last four games, has also made a case to be included during the injury-enforced absence of Spurs’ Harry Kane.

James Ward-Prowse is another player who has served Southgate well during his time with the Under-21 side and might also be considered for a senior call-up.

Southgate made the midfielder his England Under-21 captain last season.
