Manchester United have reportedly taken a significant step forward in their pursuit of Benfica midfielder Renato Sanches.
The Red Devils have been tracking the 18-year-old since he made his first-team breakthrough back in October although the brilliant youth prospect now has suitors all over Europe.
Reports in Portugal, however, state United’s executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has twice met with Benfica officials over the last fortnight.
And it’s believed United have established themselves at the front of the queue because of the recent charm offensive.
Sanches signed an improved deal back in November which included a £35million release clause.
United, though, are said to be willing to pay a premium above that figure to beat the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City to acquire his signature this summer.
Sanches is a client of Jose Mourinho’s influential agent Jorge Mendes and was linked to Chelsea before the ‘Special OneÂ’ was shown the door at Stamford Bridge earlier this season.
