Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane has distanced himself from reports he could be set to link up with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
The France international defender is said to be on a list of backline targets his former Madrid boss craves.
United have also been linked to a £50million move for Juventus and Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci, who is the subject of serious interest from rivals Manchester City.
Mourinho’s previous working relationship with Varane, however, means the Old Trafford supremo would dearly love to now entice the player away from the Spanish capital.
Reports over in Spain have hinted Madrid might be willing to listen to a big-money offer for the 23-year-old, who has been plagued by injuries in the last year.
Mourinho signed Varane from French club side, Lens, back in 2011 for a bargain £10m, ironically, at the expense of the Red Devils.
But Varane told Marca: “I want to stay here (at Real Madrid) this year.
“I feel loved by the fans, who want the best for me, and the best is yet to come.
“I hope to be allowed to start afresh – I’d like to push on, to continue improving.
“After being at Real Madrid for five years, I want to take the next step.”
