The Frenchman secured his first competitive victory since succeeding Ronald Koeman as Saints boss, as his side defeated Sparta Prague 3-0 in the Europa League.

The 55-year-old is now hoping to follow up that result with a maiden league success against Swansea at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday, as he has seen his side pick up just two points from their opening four top-flight matches this season.

He said: “It was a good result for us in Europe, now it is important to carry on the same work in the Premier League. It will be important for us and our fans also, because it is important to keep a good efficient team, to score and be rewarded for all of the many good things we can make in our game.”

Puel knows his side will face a difficult test against the Swans as he believes the Welsh club have a number of players capable of hurting his team.

He added: “Swansea are a good team with good possibilities, good individuality. All the time in the Premier League, it is a difficult game because there are many possibilities, many good players who can make the difference.”

Southampton have an impressive recent record against Swansea, as they have only lost one of the last nine meetings between the two sides, and they won both top-flight encounters last season.
