Puel’s side will try to compete in the Premier League, the EFL Cup, FA Cup and the Europa League throughout the rest of the 2016-17 campaign and the 55-year-old is confident he now has a squad good enough to do as well as possible.

Attacking midfielder Sofiane Boufal joined before the transfer deadline on Monday, while Nathan Redmond, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Alex McCarthy, Jeremy Pied and Stuart Taylor were all brought in during the window earlier in the summer.

Puel is happy with the club’s recruitment and is now looking forward to the rest of the season, starting with the clash against Arsenal in the league following the current international break.

“I think now we have a good squad to play every three days and to build a good collective together,” he told Southampton’s YouTube channel.

“It’s exciting, with the Europa League coming. It’s important now to think for the game against Arsenal, which is for important for us, and then after it is the Europa League, which is exciting.

“It’s important to keep good emotion and good values in every game – the Europa League and also Premier League. It’s important to be consistent and to give a good performance every time.”

Puel admits having to often play two big games a week will be a new experience to a lot of his squad but he hopes his players adapt quickly.

He added: “It’s interesting for the squad to learn to play every three days. It is the first time for many players of the squad, and it will be important to keep a good personality, good quality and to be consistent every time. The squad and the players must learn to play every three days, which is not easy.”
