Southampton have been linked with a fresh move for Anderlecht’s Dennis Praet, but face competition from newly-promoted Middlesbrough.
The Sun claim the Saints sent a scouting delegation to watch the 22-year-old Belgian midfielder this week and suggest a £10million swoop could be imminent.
Praet was linked to Southampton last summer when his agent was keen to get him a move but he remained in Brussels and started the campaign in poor form.
Saints boss Ronald Koeman is understood to be a fan but the £10m fee being reported sounds too much for a player just about to enter the final year of his contract.
Middlesbrough are thought to be major rivals for the midfielder’s signature with Boro scouts having been watching a number of Belgian targets this season with a view to bolstering their squad this summer.
Praet played in Anderlecht’s two defeats this week as the club were thrashed in a title decider to Club Brugge on Sunday before surrendering two leads in a 4-2 loss at Racing Genk on Thursday.
