Stoke are being linked with a move for France international Clement Chantome, who is set to leave Bordeaux this summer.
The 28-year-old, who operates as a defensive midfielder, is due to fall out of contract in the summer and so far there is no sign of him penning a new one.
That could open the door for Stoke to swoop, while Everton and newly crowned Premier League champions Leicester City have also been linked with a move.
“I do not think I’ll be here next season,” he told the French press. “I’m out of contract, I have no proposal, so for now I’m gone. We were in discussions during the last few weeks, but when we do not agree, I do not force things.”
The arrival of Chantome would put pressure on Glenn Whelan, who has made the holding role his own this season.
