Sunderland have been linked with a move for Spurs midfielder Tom Carroll, who could potentially join as a free agent.
There is confusion over Carroll’s situation at White Hart Lane as his deal is understood to have expired in June.
However, Carroll was marked down as contracted to the club when Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino published his retained and released list earlier in the summer, but the club are yet to announce an extension.
The 24-year-old did go through pre-season with Spurs but wasn’t involved in their Premier League opener against Everton last weekend.
Sunderland have now been linked with the midfielder and it remains to be seen if any kind of fee will be required to snare Carroll, while reports indicate they will face competition from the likes of West Ham, QPR and Brentford should he become available.
