Mame Diouf’s goal on Saturday gave the Potters a 1-1 draw at Chelsea – their first-ever point at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League era – and stretched Mark Hughes’ side’s unbeaten run to four games.

Pieters says optimism is high in the camp for the run-in and the squad has faith they can finish the campaign well.

“We all believe that we can keep on improving,” he said on the club’s website. “Our recent results have been very good. We had a period of bad games, but now we have picked up again and gaining positive results and performances.

“We have been unfortunate with injuries, especially in defence, but all the lads who are coming in are remaining consistent and performing very well.”

He added: “We have shown that in matches but have also shown it by working hard in training, so overall we are delighted with the team work here and hopefully we are making the fans happy as well.

“There is no doubt that we want to be better than last season. There are nine games to go and lots of points to play for so if we keep playing with belief we can get really far.”
