Italian Mannone could yet face surgery to repair damaged elbow ligaments, handing England Under-21 international Pickford his chance in goal against Saints.

Boss David Moyes has confidence Pickford can fill in in the weeks ahead, starting at St Mary’s.

“He now has his chance to show what he can do. He has a big future ahead of him,” the Black Cats boss said.

Defenders John O’Shea (hip) and Lamine Kone (back) and midfielders Fabio Borini (toe) and Jeremain Lens (foot) are being assessed and remain doubtful for the clash as Sunderland look for their first points of the season on Saturday.

New loan signing Manquillo could feature for the first time after his arrival from Atletico Madrid this week, while Jan Kirchhoff (hamstring) is expected to return to full training next week, but Billy Jones (hip), Lee Cattermole (hernia surgery) and Sebastian Larsson (knee) all remain on the sidelines.

Squad: Pickford, Stryjek, Love, Manquillo, Djilobodji, McNair, Van Aanholt, J. Robson, T. Robson, Rodwell, Gooch, Khazri, Januzaj, Pienaar, E. Robson, Asoro, Defoe, Watmore.
