The German has held football’s greatest trophy aloft and believes Arsenal team-mate Jack Wilshere can do the same with England.
Mertesacker has been so impressed by the midfielder’s renaissance this season that he believes he is a must for the Three Lions in Russia this summer.
Wilshere, one of England’s true talents, has seen his career blighted by injury and when he broke a leg during the final months of a loan spell with Bournemouth last April, doubts over his future reached a peak.
The Stevenage-born star never panicked, though, even as the Gunners held out over a new contract.
Arsene Wenger’s side have been below par on more than one occasion during this campaign but Wilshere, 26, their man in the middle, has drawn praise from all angles for a number of fine displays in the colours of the club he loves.
And it is this high standard that has Mertesacker purring.
