Derby boss Nigel Pearson has confirmed a season-long loan deal is in place to sign Manchester United striker James Wilson.
The Rams’ chief revealed the news following his side’s goalless Championship draw against Aston Villa at the iPro Stadium on Saturday evening.
The 20-year-old, who has scored four goals in 20 appearances for United, had been linked with a move away from Old Trafford for the majority of this summer transfer window having fallen down the pecking order behind the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, while boss Jose Mourinho is using Wayne Rooney in a more advanced role this season.
And, having spent the majority of last season on loan at Brighton, where he scored five goals in 28 games to help the Seagulls finish in third spot, missing out on promotion on goal difference, Wilson will now look to shine with Derby.
Pearson said Wilson was unlikely to figure against Carlisle in the League Cup on Tuesday night but is excited at securing his signature.
He said: “He will bring some pace, desire to run in behind and will give us energy.
“When you consider the amount of interest there’s been in a player like him I’m delighted we have been able to bring him in and hopefully we can provide a very positive experience for him.”
