PAUL MERSON COLUMN: Tottenham and West Ham stadium failure, Paul Pogba disappointment

BOURNEMOUTH invited me down to give their squad a talk last Wednesday. There I was, sitting on stage, and they introduced me and showed some of my goals.

That brought a round of applause, but before I could start talking the club psychologist says: “Right, let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way.”

So I’m wondering what he’s on about and he says: “You said on Sky at the start of the season these players were going to get relegated. Would you like to tell them why?”

I was thinking, ‘Uh-oh’ – but I knew I couldn’t sit there and melt after saying that on TV, so I said my bit and they listened.

I told them how I thought they could improve. They were as good as gold. They all just sat there and listened. It was quite clever by Cherries boss Eddie Howe.

And it worked because they won, didn’t they? I said sorry to Eddie afterwards, but he just smiled.

I think they will stay up now and Jack Wilshere could be the difference. He’s the equivalent of a £30m signing and I think he’ll do well there.
