PAUL MERSON COLUMN: Roy Hodgson risked Tottenham’s title bid, Gary Neville to Villa?

2 Apr

I WAS shocked Gary Neville got the sack – but he should go for the Aston Villa job.

The timing of both those decisions was odd. Why now? We’ve just had a two-week international break.

Do it after the last game, not just as all the players are about to come back. I feel sorry for Gary.

Valencia are a better team now than they were when he went there. It was just too big a job.

It will hurt him. But he’s got to brush himself off and get back in quickly. They say wait for the right job.

But where’s Brendan Rodgers? Go back further and where’s Alan Curbishley? Villa is a big job, even in the Championship.

They’ll throw money at it, get thousands of fans every week and could win that league.

Besides, the alternative is going back on Monday Night Football and having to tell Sam Allardyce he should have done x, y and z after he’s lost 2-0.

Now Sam and every other manager can turn round and say: “Ah, but it’s not so easy, is it, Gary?”
